Halter Judge: BARBARA DILLEY

2007 Halter Judge, Barbara Dilley:

Barbara says: "I got my first donkeys around 1985.  They were so different than horses and won me over.

I learned of Mammoth donkeys and while checking them out to see if I'd like them, found Moses T Mulemaker.  He was 2 years old and had been started in harness, under saddle and taught to breed mares.  That was the beginning of my breeding career.

I showed Moses at Bishop Mule Days in halter and driving classes since he was too young to be under saddle very much until he was 5 years old.

He won World Champion Halter Jack in 1994 and after siring mules for 10 years, I decided to take a chance and breed him to donkeys.

Some jacks won't breed mares once introduced to jennets, but Moses did both.  We spent 14 years showing, always in the ribbons, and breeding before I decided I didn't want to breed any more babies, and after 2 years of struggling with the decision, I had Moses gelded.  I couldn't bear to sell him so now he is a very happy gelding!

Over the years I have learned a great deal about what makes a good breeding animal and am very impressed with the improved quality of donkeys and mules since I first entered the business."
